[The Legislative Blog]: Hon Dogara’s statement denying a relationship with James Ibori is not enough

A video surfaced on the internet yesterday where Senator Peter Nwaoboshi revealed that even while former Delta state governor, James Ibori was in prison in the United Kingdom, he extended support to Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara.

Representing Delta North senatorial district, Senator Nwaoboshi said in Ibori’s London home on Thursday: “There may never be a governor again in the history of Nigeria who will sit in prison and make a Senator. There may never be a governor again in the country, who will sit in a cell and support the Senate President. There may never be a governor, who will sit in a prison, and make a Speaker (of the House of Representatives), and there may never be a governor, who will sit in a cell or prison, and make his daughter a member of the House of Assembly.”

Following the release of that video which has now gone viral, Hon Yakubu Dogara has released a statement disowning James Ibori, who was recently released from the UK prison.statement

But why should we believe Speaker Yakubu Dogara? James Ibori pleaded guilty to 10 counts of money laundering and stealing $50m from the Delta State treasury, Hon Dogara is at the centre of the budget padding allegations that rocked 2016, Senator Bukola Saraki faced a 13-count charge of misusing state funds while he was governor of Kwara state.

We’re not necessarily trying to create a link but these men have a lot in common and the possibility that these men who lead Nigeria’s legislative arm answer to an imprisoned kingmaker can and should not be ruled out.

Until it is proven that Senator Peter Nwaoboshi who made these claims publicly, is delusional or has reason to disparage the reputation of both senators named, then we might have to take his claims seriously regardless of Hon Dogara’s letter of disownment.

We’re totally here for more revelations of this sort and hope that they will be investigated by our corruption-fighting government.
