Lassa fever outbreak confirmed in 19 states

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Thursday, confirmed at least one reported Lassa fever case, in each of 19 states in the current outbreak which started in December 2016.

The development was published in a report on NCDC’s website.

Highlights:

  • In the current Lassa Fever outbreak, nineteen (19) States: Ogun, Bauchi, Plateau, Ebonyi, Ondo, Edo, Taraba, Nasarawa, Rivers, Kaduna, Gombe, Cross-River, Borno, Kano, Kogi, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos and Kaduna, have reported at least one confirmed case.
  • As at week 35 (August 26-Sept 1, 2017), the outbreak is actively in 8 states: Ondo, Edo, Plateau, Bauchi, Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna and Kwara.
  • Since the onset of LF outbreak in Dec. 2016 (Week 49), a total of 263 cases have been classified as: confirmedii (249) and probableiii
    (14), with 85 deaths (71 deaths in confirmed and 14 in probable) recorded.
  • Case Fatality Rate in confirmed and probable cases is 32.3% and 14.8% for all cases (including probable, confirmed and suspected).
  • In the reporting Week 35 (August 26-Sept 1, 2017), 1 new suspected case was reported in Plateau state. 2 new confirmed cases were reported from Edo state. No death was recorded this week. Pending samples reported last week from Ogun (1), Edo (28), Plateau (1) and Bauchi (4) all came out negative.
  • There are 3 pending results from Ondo (2) and Plateau (1) states.
