Over 50 people dead, suspect named: Everything we know about Las Vegas shooting

A mass shooting incident in Las Vegas has resulted in over 50 deaths and hundreds injured, here’s everything you should know.

  • How it occurred

A lone gunman opened fire from a perch high up in the the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday, during the final night of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival which was taking place across the street from Mandalay Bay when and concertgoers were caught off-guard night.

The “nonstop gunfire,” according to one witness, sent bystanders outside the resort on the Vegas strip ducking for cover and fleeing for their lives. Tourists hid in their hotel rooms and flights headed into the McCarran International Airport were held elsewhere.

The latest toll of casualties

At least 50 people were killed in the shooting which occurred outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip during a music festival on Sunday evening.

Witnesses said shots were being fired from an elevated hotel position. More than 200 people were wounded.

  • Comments from concertgoers and witness

“We were just at the concert there, and Jason Aldean was playing,” one of the concertgoers, named Mike Cronk, 48, a retired teacher, told ABC News. “Kinda sounded like some fireworks going off. I think there was the first kinda volley, and then all of the sudden second volley. My buddy’s like ‘I just got hit, ya know.’ He got hit three times. Then people started diving for the ground. And it just continued.”

Cronk stressed further: “It was pretty much chaotic. Lots of people got hit. …It took a while to get him out. We had to get him over the fence and hiding under the stage for a while, ya know, to be safe. And finally we had to move him because he had three chest wounds.”

One witness told KSVN that he heard “hundreds of shots.” The gunfire was rapid and reportedly confused with firecrackers.

One vendor told Fox News: “It sounded like a machine gun. It sounded like more than one machine gun.”

• Fate of the suspects

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said one suspect who has now been identified as a 64-year old white male Stephen Paddock, was engaged on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and has been killed; they don’t believe there are any other shooters.

• Valuable information on the victims

LVMPD Sheriff Joe Lombardo revealed that, off-duty police officers are among the dead. Their identities have not been released. Two police officers are also being treated for injuries — one officer is in critical condition and the other has minor injuries.

• Lombardo’s plea and hunt for the accomplice

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo believes the killed suspect is a sole actor, but said the Police are seeking and interested in talking to a companion of the suspect, Marilou Danley, an Asian female who has has not yet been located.

Lombardo also called for the public’s help in searching for two vehicles registered to the suspect: a Hyandai Tucson with a Nevada license plate, 114B40, and a Chrysler Pacifica Touring, also with a Nevada license plate, 19D401.

In addition, the Las Vegas police have urged anyone with footage or photographs of the events at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino to get in touch with them as they try to arrange the details of the incident.
