Lagos shuts schools due to #EndSARS protests

The Lagos state government has ordered all pupils and students in public and private schools to stay home.

In a statement on Monday, Spokesperson of the State Ministry of Education, Kayode Abayomi, said Folashade Adefisayo, Commissioner for Education, issued the directive following the unrest generated by the #EndSARS protests. He said the commissioner noted that the directive is to ensure the safety of the pupils, students, parents and all staff working in schools.

Adefisayo said a new date of resumption for all classes will be announced as soon as possible.

#EndSARS: Edo sets up Judicial Panel of Inquiry, declares curfew after prison break-in

The Edo State Government set up a 12-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry to unravel circumstances surrounding the #EndSARS protests in the state; imposed curfew after hoodlums break into prison.

Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, in a statement, disclosed that the Panel was set up in response to the yearnings of Nigerian youths, as articulated in the demands of the #EndSARS protesters. He added that,

“to receive complaints and petitions from the general public, particularly victims or relatives of victims of police brutality and extra-judicial killings, and to recommend measures, including compensation and restitution, investigation and prosecution, as the circumstances warrant.”

On Monday, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state, moments after hoodlums invaded a prison facility on Benin-Sapele road and set inmates free.

This decision has become necessary because of the very disturbing incidents of vandalism and attacks on private individuals and institutions by hoodlums in the guise of #EndSARS protesters. While the government of Edo State respects the rights of its citizens to undertake legitimate protests, it cannot sit idly when hoodlums have taken laws into their hands to cause mayhem on innocent citizens and the state,” Obaseki added.

Crocodile Smile has nothing to do with #EndSARS protest –Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has declared that its planned ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’ is not intended to interfere with the ongoing #ENDSARS protest.

Nigerians have raised concerns about the timing of the exercise with many positing that the army might use the exercise to clamp down on peaceful protesters across the country.

Clarifying its position on the exercise, Colonel Sagir Musa, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, said the exercise had “no relationship with any lawful protest under any guise whatsoever”.

“Thus, to now insinuate that it is an exercise meant to stifle the ongoing ENDSARS protest is to say the least highly misinformed. Exercise Crocodile Smile VI has nothing to do with the ongoing protest and the Nigerian Army has never been involved in the ongoing protest in any form whatsoever. So far, the army has acted professionally since the civil protest started over two weeks ago,” he added.

EFCC admits website was attacked

Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has admitted that its website experienced an attempted cyber-attack over the weekend.

The Anonymous, a group of foreign activists prominent for hacking repressive government’s website, had claimed responsibility for attacking the EFCC website in support of the nationwide #EndSARS protest.

In reaction, the EFCC via a statement posted on its Twitter handle, on Monday admitted that the commission experienced a cyber-attack of its website, which was later repelled.

“Though there were attempts, over the weekend, to compromise the website by some cyber criminals, the attacks were successfully repelled. The EFCC website is up and running. The EFCC, therefore, urges members of the public to disregard the report, in addition to the one which also claims that the commission’s website had been hacked,” the statement read.
