‘King of Boys’ reportedly grosses N200m at box office, maintains number one spot for seven weeks

Kemi Adetiba’s political thriller King of Boys is now a bonafide box office darling, with a reported N200 million earnings in its seventh week as the number one film in cinemas. What a way to smile to the bank. Frankly, the movie’s recent feat can be attributed to a deluge of positive reviews from critics and word-of-mouth praises. Type in the #KOB hashtag on Twitter and you’d find frenzied amounts of feedback, all positive and encouraging and bolstering. Also, the movie is the fourth highest grossing Nollywood film of all time, preceded by The Wedding Party and its sequel and AY Makun’s schlocky travel comedy A Trip to Jamaica.

Beyond that, King of Boys will be a serious contender in next year’s award season, and I can’t wait for first-time actor and rapper Reminisce to disrupt Falz’s monopoly when he wins an AMVCA. Bragging rights, for sure. As it is, King of Boys is gearing towards its U.K. premiere hitting cinemas December 28, presenting an opportunity for UK-based fans of Adetiba to watch the movie. Although with just two movies in her oeuvre, Adetiba has primed her career for the future and we can only wait to see what comes up with next.
