Jonathan seeks Senate’s approval to effect name change for Unilag, others

The president is not slowing down in his push to have the University of Lagos (UNILAG) bear a new name,  Moshood Abiola University, Lagos. He asked the Senate on Wednesday, June 6 for its approval to rename not just the University of Lagos, but two other universities in the country.

In a letter sent by the president to the Senate, and read on the floor of the House during plenary, the president asked for approval to rename the Federal University of Technology Umudike to Michael Okpara University Umudike; Federal University of Technology Yola to Modibbo Adama University Yola; and University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University Lagos.

It would be recalled that the president had announced the name change for UNILAG in his Democracy Day broadcast to Nigerians, an announcement that sparked spontaneous protests from the school’s stakeholders.
