Jonathan appoints Shekarau, three others as ministers

Almost two months after President Goodluck Jonathan attended a rally in Kano to welcome Ibrahim Shekarau to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the president has nominated him a minister.

The nomination, among the four sent to the Senate, would have to be confirmed by the Senate before he is assigned a ministerial slot and sworn into office.

Mr. Shekarau, a former two-term governor of Kano, was a founding member and leader of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC. He played a major role in the merger of the initial All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, with others to form the APC. Read more….

Scores dead as armed gunmen raid 4 Borno villages

Heavily armed gunmen raided four villages in northeast Nigeria leaving scores dead and sending survivors fleeing the attacks blamed on Boko Haram, a local lawmaker and residents said on Wednesday.

The gunmen dressed as soldiers arrived in all-terrain vehicles and on motorcycles and attacked Goshe, Attagara, Agapalwa and Aganjara in the Gwoza district of Borno state, late on Tuesday. Read more….

Borno sets aside N100m for education of Chibok girls 

The Borno government on Wednesday said it had set aside N100 million for the education of the 57 students of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, who escaped from captivity.

Gov. Kashim Shettima made the disclosure in Maiduguri when he met with members of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) counseling and rehabilitating the affected girls.

He said “we are willing to rehabilitate the girls and those still in captivity as soon as they return before re-integrating them back to the society. Read more….

FG approves N40bn loan for Lagos State Govt.

The Federal Government has approved a N40 billion loan facility for Lagos State Government for the development of infrastructure and education in the state, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, said.

Maku made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja when he briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said the approval followed a memo brought to the Council by Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, seeking approval to obtain additional credit facility from the International Development Association (IDA). Read more….

LUTH doctors vow not to return to work  

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, on Wednesday said its members would not return to work after the three days nationwide warning strike.

Dr Omojowolo Olubunmi, the President of the LUTH branch of the association, made this known in an interview with NAN in Lagos.

Olubunmi said that the local strike would be indefinite since LUTH management had yet to meet the association’s demands. Read more….
