The United States government says it will conduct Ebola virus screening on some of the attending participants of the African/American Leaders Summit billed for Monday, 4 August, in Washington DC, United States.

President Goodluck Jonathan is one of several African leaders who’ll be attending the summit which is organised by President Barack Obama.

Jonathan will be making the trip to Washington alongside his aides who will most likely be subjected to thorough screening for Ebola.

On Friday, 1 August, Obama explained that the action was necessary to protect the US and its citizens from a possible outbreak of the disease.

He added that his government takes risks from the deadly Ebola virus very seriously and has therefore set up testing for the expected African leaders.

He said, “Folks who are from these countries that have even a marginal risk, or an infinitesimal risk of having been exposed in some fashion, we’re making sure we’re doing screening.”

Meanwhile, two African leaders, President of Liberia, Mrs Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Sierra Leone President, Ernest BaiKoroma, have said that they would not attend the meeting because of the outbreak of the Ebola disease in their countries.
