[The Injustice Blog] When will President Buhari intervene in the herdsmen vs farmers crisis across the country?

herdsmen

The incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen in the country reached a breaking point recently when 73 individuals were buried in Benue state after they were hacked down by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The attacks which was condemned by all and sundry got the President to act for a record first time on the incessant herdsmen killings in the country.

Despite his absence and failure to send delegation to the burial of those unlucky Nigerians, the President played host to a Benue state delegation at his Aso Villa residence few days after the burial, despite the fact that he should have been the one to travel to Benue to commiserate. It doesn’t matter as he still remains the number one citizen of the country.

The meeting held behind closed doors as no one was privy to what was discussed but the main statement released after the meeting which forms the headline of all newspapers and news report the next day was depressing. According to the statement released by his spokesmen the President enjoin the people of Benue to accommodate their fellow countrymen.

There was no mention of a condolence or commiserating with the people of the state, the accommodate your countrymen message was an indirect way of blaming Benue indigenes of provoking the Fulani herdsmen to anger, a statement condemned by various public speakers on the non conveyance of sympathy by the President. To show the meeting itself was not one with an happy ending, the state Governor, Samuel Ortom in an interview with state house correspondents after the meeting wore a mournful look and outrightly rejected the idea of a cattle colony as Benue has no land for that.

Also the constant attacks by Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria on the personality of the Governors of Benue and Taraba that hasn’t been curtailed by the President. It is also massive conflict of interest that President Buhair who is their grand Patron keeps asking the victims to forgive or accommodate when he should ask the Miyetti Allah cattle breeders to exercise restraint. Several times the Miyetti Allah group has made inciting statements on National TV and they’ve not been apprehended or even chastised.

In the neighboring country of Ghana, the herdsmen are begging the Government for more time to relocate their cattle, here in Nigeria they issue threats to elected state Governors and personalities. The President has sure not done enough to stem this crisis. As 2019 approaches, issues like this will shape the elections.
