[The Injustice Blog] The adverse effects of establishing another Public Institution in Ogun

The Ogun state government just established a new Polytechnic in Ipokia, Ogun west Senatorial District of the state, which, according to the Govenor, is in fulfillment of his electoral promise to the people of the district.

Lets scrutinise the implications of the new polytechnic.

The state is establishing the school at a time states are struggling to pay salaries and accumulating debt to stay afloat. What a responsible manager should do in a time like this is to reduce its spending and not increase it.

This Polytechnic will further deplete the insufficient financial base of the state. It will also shoot up the monthly wage bill which currently stands at N9.1 Billion – an amount the state is finding difficult to pay.

This shows the government was not tactic enough before embarking on this project and, the future of the polytechnic may be cloudy just as the Maritime University in Gbaramatu Delta state is.

The state has also set a precedence where higher institutions are established by politicians irrespective of its viability, which will hereinafter destroy the standard of education.

At a time the primary and secondary schools in the state are not up to standards, building a new institution should not have been on the government’s agenda.

In the WAEC ranking for 2017, Ogun emerged 19th out of 36 states, behind imo, Anambra, kaduna.

The crop of students they parade at the primary and secondary level are non-competitive students, due to the lack of necessary facilities to enhance their teaching and learning. These students will gain admission to the polytechnic that is less staffed and the trend continues. The result will have a negative effect on education in the state.

Ogun needs to rethink its decision on this Polytechnic before entering an avoidable crisis.
