Independence Day tragedy: Family of five found dead in Ikorodu

by Damilola Jagun

It was a black Independence Day for residents of the Itamaga area of Ikorodu as a family of five, including four boys and their mother, were found dead in their residence, an uncompleted building located on 8, Kunle Owooade Close.

Eyewitnesses around the area say the deceased were last seen on Friday, 26 September. When neighbours did not see them for three days, they assumed they had gone for church programmes, however, their decomposing bodies were found on Tuesday, 30 September. One died on the way to the hospital.

Around 8pm on Tuesday, neighbours noticed an offensive odour oozing out of the building. When they eventually managed to break into their apartment, three of the children were found in one room, while the mother was found in another room with her last born.

Policemen from Ikorodu Division were notified of the incident, but after they arrived at the scene, they were reluctant to do anything, suspecting it to be a case of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

The death of the five family members has been attributed to many factors, from food poisoning to generator fume. But many of the residents felt it could be as a result of the Ebola Virus Disease.
