US reaffirms commitment to the rescue of the Chibok schoolgirls
The United States has stressed its commitment to the ongoing efforts to rescue the over 200 school girls abducted by the Boko Haram sect.
According to a US senior official, a key focus of the U.S-Nigerian bilateral relationship is combating violent extremist groups and building law enforcement capacity while protecting civilians and strengthening respect for human rights. Read more….
#BringBackOurGirls: UK sends minister to Nigeria
The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office Minister, Mark Simmonds, will meet with Nigerian government officials on Tuesday for high-level meetings to discuss further assistance.
The meeting will explore what further assistance and advice the UK can provide in support of Nigeria’s efforts to secure the girls’ release and to deal with the threat posed by the Boko Haram sect.
The UK team of experts, in Abuja since May 9, is co-operating closely with the government and other international partners to provide assistance to Nigeria in dealing with this abduction and addressing longer term challenges. Read more….
IGP warns Nigerians against ‘jungle justice’
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. MD Abubakar, has warned Nigerians to desist from taking the law into their hands in connection with citizens suspected to have committed a crime.
In a statement by police spokesman Frank Mba, the IGP underlined that every citizen is entitled to the fundamental right of fair hearing, and that nobody is guilty unless a law court of competent jurisdiction expressly says so. Read more….
Tanzania jails 4 Nigerian footballers
Four Nigerian football players were sentenced to six-months jail by Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s court after pleading guilty of illegal stay in the country. Kisutu is an administrative ward in the Ilala district of the Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania.
Andrew Okoro and Chiku Odia appeared before Magistrate Frank Moshi and after pleading guilty they were each fined 100,000 Shillings or serve a six-month jail term. The duo opted to jail terms after failing to pay the stated fine. Read more….
