Igbonla boys release: The Nigeria Police can do better

by Tosin Adesina

The Nigeria Police Force is one that has lost its values over the years, from bribery to extortion of unsuspecting members of the public and other vices unexpected of security agencies.

Lots of individuals have lost their lives through the actions of trigger happy police officers because of a miserly twenty Naira bribe.

However, the recent release of the six kidnapped students of Igbonla Model College, Epe has shown that we have something to be happy about concerning the police especially the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by ACP Abba Kyari.

Of recent, the team has been responsible for the release of some individuals abducted in Nigeria. Worthy of note is the mother of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Mrs Emefiele, the wife of the CBN Governor among others. Also the team has recorded some level of success in its bid to rid the country of kidnapping and other criminal activities which has resulted in the arrest of two kidnap kingpins Godogodo and Evans.

These two individuals were once a nightmare of the police and the community at large but their ignoble reign was brought to an end through the intervention of the (IRT) but it is not yet Uhuru, as the police still has to do more to convince Nigerians of its effectiveness.

Thousands of Nigerians have been missing for years with no end in sight to their return.

Worthy of mentioning is Alhaji Rasak Gawat and Bukola Olowookere both went missing on the 6th of July 2012 and 5th of May 2016 respectively. They also deserved to be released and reconnected to their families. The constant practice where only those whose case generated ripples are investigated till the end with result to show for it won’t do us any good.

The police have done well by bringing back the boys but they can do better to unravel the mystery behind other missing Nigerians.
