The 2018/2019 English Premier League came to a climax on Sunday with Manchester City beating Liverpool to clinch the trophy for the sixth time in their history.

In a keenly contested competition between both teams for which the leader on the top of the table switched 32 times at the end of a day this season, it ended as the eighth time a winner would be decided on the final day of the season, with Manchester City winning it on three of those occasions (2011-12, 2013-14 and 2018-19).

According to Vincent Kompany, City’s captain “It was the hardest but most satisfying Premier League title win ever.”

With a combined points of 195; it became the most accumulated points by the top two in a single English top-flight season also breaking the record for the fewest combined defeats – five after Chelsea and Arsenal in 2004-05 and Manchester United and Liverpool in 2008-09  who had six defeats between them.

Liverpool pair Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane  shared this season’s Golden Boot with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 22 goals. The only the fourth time two players in the same team have reached that landmark in a Premier League season.

Below are other notable team records set out this season and some individual award winners:

MANCHESTER CITY

The Cityzens became the first team to retain the Premier League title since Manchester United in 2008/09.

They equalled their own record for the most wins in a single English top-flight league season (32), also winning 32 times last season.

Manager Pep Guardiola, in his third season in charge of the Cityzens, became the third manager ever to retain the League title.

Striker, Sergio Aguero with 21 goals, became only the second player to score 20 or more Premier League goals in six different seasons after Alan Shearer and also became the second player in the competition to score 20 Premier League goals for the fifth consecutive season after Thierry Henry between 2001/02 and 2005/06.

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk was crowned Player of the 2018/19 Season.

Alisson Becker with 21 clean sheets won the Golden Glove award, beating the club’s record set by Pepe Reina who managed 20 clean sheets in his first season at Anfield in the 2005/06 campaign.

20-year old Trent Alexander-Arnold provided 12 assists in the campaign this season, the most by a defender in a single season in the history of the Premier League.

Liverpool became the first team in top-flight history to win as many as 30 games and 97 points in a season and not win the title. No side had previously lost just one game in a top-flight season and not won the title. Margins.

The Reds which went the entire campaign unbeaten at home (W17 D2 L0), extended their home unbeaten run to 40 matches –  a record previously attained only by Chelsea who had a longer unbeaten run in Premier League history for 86 games between 2004 and 2008).

CHELSEA

Eden Hazard with 15 assists won the Playmaker Award.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPURS

Christian Eriksen’s goal against Everton was the 1067th Premier League goal this season; more goals than any other 38-game season of the competition.

 

ARSENAL

Arsenal kept just one league clean sheet away from home this season, their fewest in a single top-flight campaign since 1967-68.

 

MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester United kept two home clean sheets in the Premier League this season, their fewest at Old Trafford in a top-flight campaign since 1962-63.

 

LEICESTER CITY

James Maddison was the only player to create 100 goal scoring chances in the Premier League this season & was the first English player to create 100+ in a single Premier League campaign since Leighton Baines in 2012-13 (116).

 

SOUTHAMPTON

Striker, Shane Long scored the fastest goal in Premier League history against Watford, clocking in at 7.69 seconds after kick off. The record was previously held by Ledley King when he scored within 9.82 seconds for Tottenham Hotspur against Bradford City in December 2000.

 

Thirty-six goals on the final day of the Premier League ensured that the 2018-19 season was the most prolific of all time in a 38-game season.
