President Muhammadu Buhari moments on ago addressed Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast. Buhari who spoke from the Aso Rock Villa said his administration had done well in the areas of corruption, security and the economy.

Here are five things we learnt from Buhari’s speech.

1. The Not Too Young To Run Bill will be signed

President Muhammadu Buhari during his speech promised to sign the #NotTooYoungToRun bill in the next few days.

Buhari’s decision to sign the bill will be received with joy by many youth across the country.

2. Public safety and security remains Buhari’s primary duty

President Buhari said his administration is focused on the safety and security of Nigerians, saying it is his primary responsibility. Speaking during the democracy day speech, Buhari said, “before this Administration came into being 3 years ago, Boko Haram held large areas of land spanning several Local Governments in the North East’, adding that the “capacity of the insurgents has been degraded leading to the re-establishment of authority of government and the release of captives including, happily, 106 Chibok and 104 Dapchi girls, and over 16,000 other persons held by the Boko Haram”.

3. The war against corruption will continue

The president said his administration will not rest on its oars in its corruption fight, saying it is the second primary objective of his administration. Buhari said, “Nigerians and the international community have begun to applaud our policies and determination to fight corruption.” Speaking further, Buhari said his administration had recovered over N500 Billion through the Whistle-Blowing Policy, adding that the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit has helped to remove 52000 ghost workers from the payroll of Federal Government MDAs.

4. Nigeria is investing hugely in infrastructure

President Buhari reeled out his administration’s achievements in the area of infrastructural development.

The president said, “the Education Sector, especially at tertiary level, has continued to witness expansion in order to improve access to higher education by millions of youth in Nigeria. Over the last three years, Government has approved the establishment of 1 new Federal Polytechnic, granted licenses for the establishment of 4 State and 14 private-owned Universities as well as 12 private Polytechnics.” He added that reports available to him show that Nigerians now receive better power supply and use fewer generators, underscoring, “the effectiveness of the methodical plan to deliver incremental and uninterrupted power supply to our homes, markets, offices and factories.”

5. There’s improvement in the economy

Speaking during his democracy day speech, Buhari said Nigeria’s ” foreign reserve has improved significantly to 47.5 billion USD as of May, 2018 as against 29.6 billion USD in 2015″, saying his administration, “focused on revamping the ailing economy it inherited in 2015”. Buhari said his administration was the first to earmark 30% of the budget for capital expenditure which represents an upward review when compared with the 2015 budget. The president said to make the economy better, his government in 2016 executed an expansionary budget and developed the Strategic Implementation Plan. The SIP was followed by the development of a comprehensive medium-term plan – the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan 2017 – 2020.
