“I sleep well at night” – Tunde Bakare speaks out on criticism

By Hauwa Gambo

Since joining the fore runners of the anti-fuel subsidy removal campaign, outspoken pastor and Save Nigeria Group (SNG) Convener, Tunde Bakare has been under threats allegedly from the federal government.

News that President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the SSS to arrest  Bakare and three others including  civil rights attorney, Femi Falana, ex-member of house of representatives, Dino Melaye and Kaduna based activist, Shehu Sani began circulating yesterday, 15 January.

The pastor had previously read the names of 10 top marketers allegedly benefiting from fuel subsidy, pointing out that the Senate was appalled by their nefarious activities, following an audit. He blamed the federal government for the leakages, stressing that the N1.3 trillion subsidy is a joke.

He said yesterday:

“The President is using ringworm medicine to cure epilepsy. We will fight the error with truth. There are multiple and conflicting roles of NNPC as agent and customer of the federal government. N1.6 trillion paid as subsidy between 2007 and 2011 when oil price was on the increase, representing N60.6 billion annually. In 2011, it became N1.3 trillion”.

Bakare revealed that the government through agents also threatened to blackmail him saying they would dig out his past if he didn’t back out of the protest but he called their bluff telling them he had nothing to hide.

“I was asked why I went to Ojota with my whole family…my response is this: It’s evil to ask other people and their children come out to protest while you hide your own. Leadership must be transparent. My wife was called and told to inform me….’DO NOT SLEEP AT HOME TONIGHT..we are coming for you’. Odumakin also got the same text message….I got home that day, tired, ate my food and slept like a log of wood!”

There are claims that the government plans to remove the leaders and iconic figures backing the rallies and protests from the scene so that the people will disperse and go home. To this Bakare retorted: “It will be foolish for anybody to ascribe the success of the rallies and protest in Ojota and other parts of the country to Save Nigeria Group and its allies..ONLY GOD COULD HAVE DONE THIS. There is a clear handwriting on the wall that God is at work in Nigeria.”
