In what would probably make for a historic episode of Hoarders, a house in California has been found to contain over 100 kittens. But even more bizarre than the apparent feline obsession is that all of the cats were dead.

Police and authorities from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for Monterey County discovered the 113 carcasses in an apartment in Seaside, California, wit another 57 sick kittens stashed away in a nearby house.

According to Sergeant Stacy Sanders of the SPCA, “The cats were living in extremely horrible conditions. They were separated into two groups and locked into rooms with little to no ventilation. The floors were saturated in urine and feces.”

“Officers stayed about six hours to recover all the cats because an occupant in the house had lost count of how many were there,” Sanders said. “We had to go through every nook and cranny, pull apart every bed and chair.”

Even more curious is that none of the dead  cats was over two months old.

“It definitely makes you go home and kind of hug your animals a little tighter at night,” said Sanders, who has a dog and a cat.

The surviving cats are currently in the care of the SPCA. Five are said to be pregnant.

“I hate to see any of these hoarding cases,” SPCA spokeswoman Beth Brookhouser said. “They are all tragic in their own ways, but for me personally, this is the first time with so many deceased cats.”
