Heroes of the Alternative sounds: Morientez thrills, TJan titillates, Jessie Jags amuses

Lagos has always boasted of a healthy underground music scene and an increasing appetite for alternative music. But the demography of fan base has never been measured neither do we know the extent alternative music has impacted the industry.

In the past year, alternative singers have slowly crept into our consciousness, finding mainstream relevance in a market that have previously pushed them to the backburner. At present, it could be argued that the music taste of Nigerians is diversifying, making space for new voices and acts.

On Sunday, October 15, while Lagos prepared her bed for sleep, guests arrived at Ubi Franklin’s Tilt Terrace for a night of laughter, serenaded by beautiful live music performance by alternative musicians, who have steadily built up a fan base underground.

It was the first Mo Time show – a planned bi-monthly performance that will feature alternative singers and headlined by new act, Morientez, an alternative who, for the sake of convenience, performs like a male version of Asa.

First, it was Squeeze Tarela who took the stage to perform a set of reggae-meets-RnB songs, backed up by the Mo Time band. Next came TJan, who took the small crowd of Lagos affluent personalities on a trip through the complexities and deliciousness of love and romance. TJan sang some of his most memorable songs and proved that his vocal dexterity on recordings is neither a fluke nor a product of studio magic.

Then came the man of the hour, Morientez. Shy, with a seductive smile playing on his lips as if he had a big secret that will blow our minds, Morientez, backed by his Mo Time band, rendered several songs that set fire to the cool night. His songs, infused richly with racy words and several indigenous languages, are unique in its lyrical brilliance and strength and bears a rich similarity to Asa.

When Jessie Jags arrived, he mingled through the guest in a lively and bustling manner making sure his presence was noticed before taking the stage for a surprise performance with the live band that lasted for about fifteen minutes.

Morientez closed up the night’s music performance with a mouth-watering rendition of his new single with Solid Star, Ima before handing over the microphone to Funnybone, Whalemouth and Pencil the Comedian who thrilled the guests with jokes and banter till past midnight.

Also present at the event were Ric Hassani, Ubi Franklin, Sexy Steel, Solid Star, Tjan, Ajebo Comedian and a host of other celebrities.

Amidst Lagos upper class and notable personalities, it is safe to say that good music has no demography and that small, intimate events like this will soon become a preferred choice.
