Here’s your first look at David Oyelowo as Javert in “Les Misérables”

David Oyelowo

Two months ago, Victor Hugo’s classic 19th century novel Les Misérables was announced as a TV adaptation. Unlike the 2012 film, the six-part series will no be based on the musical. The casting of David Oyelowo in the BBC series enriched the ensemble: Lily Collins (Okja, Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) to play the role of Fantine, and Dominic West (The Wire, The Awakening) is Jean Valjean.

Oyelowo will play the role of Javert, and the just-released images will be something to hold on to before we are blessed with a trailer. According to Variety, the series is going to explore Huge’s celebrated novel more deeply, with the focus on the relationship between Jean Valjean and Javert.

The backdrop is the French civil unrest, and the synopsis says that the series will “faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery and, above all, the incredible yet accessory story that was Hugo’s lifework.”

Although Les Misérables is one of the most lauded works of French literature, most people are familiar only with the musical, which is the world’s longest-running musical, this being its 33rd year (it began in 1985).

BBC’s Led Misérables, which was shot in Belgium and France, will begin airing next year.
