Heavily armed men abduct ESUT VC

by Isi Esene

Heavily armed men, around 11:30 am this morning, kidnapped the vice chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Cyprain Onyeji. Three policemen guarding the entrance of the university were said to have been seriously injured in the incident.

Witnesses say the four-man gang of heavily armed abductors stopped Onyeji while he was about to drive into the school gate. They were reported to have shot sporadically into the air while the security men at the gate ran for cover. Many students within the vicinity also took to their heels.

A witness said, “They shot and deflated the four tyres of the police van escorting the VC. A policeman in the escort van who tried to fight back, was shot while the gunmen dragged the VC’s orderly and driver out of the car, before driving off with Professor Onyeji in his official Honda car.”

Mr. Ossy Ugwuoti, who is the Public Relations officer of the institution, said the abductors are yet to make any ransom demands but he assured that the relevant security operatives are on top of the situation.

The Police Public Relations officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident saying the police is doing everything to make sure the VC is rescued with no harm done to him. He said the injured policemen in the attack have been taken to the hospital.
