Falz will be the man of the night + 4 other things we expect to see at the Headies tonight

The 2016 edition of the Headies is set to hold tonight – as organizers, performing acts and nominees prepare for the show, we also look forward to a very eventful night if we decide to judge based on last year’s show.

This year, however, there is already a buildup of controversy as organizers recently announced the withdrawal of Tekno’s nomination .

Here are five things we expect to see (or not) at the award show tonight:

1. The hosts will may not sync: We cannot deny Adesua Etomi’s extraordinary talent as an actress; no need decorating Falzthebahdguy here, he’s effortlessly made us all understand the stuff he’s made of when it comes to entertainment.

Two great individuals when they stand alone but we’re not sure of the strength of their synergy on stage tonight. Adesua does not seem a match for Falz in terms of holding a crowd spellbound. It might end up like another Toke Makinwa/Basketmouth mismatch that was experienced in the 2014 edition.

But maybe our speculations are false, we’ll find out in few hours.

2. Falz will be THE man of the night: He’s the rapper, actor and social media comic act. Falz has bagged six Headies nominations, he won’t win all but hopefully will pick up at least three, will very likely perform by himself or with Simi and to cap it all, he will host the show.

There’s bound to be a lot of Falz in our faces winning on multiple sides at the event but we truly will not mind.

3. Everyone will be on their best behaviour: Because Ayo Animashaun has particularly warned artistes who try to pull the same stunts Olamide did at the 2015 edition that there will be consequences for misbehaviour.

We hear Davido has threatened fire and brimstone if his label artiste, Mayorkun fails to clinch an award. Mayorkun and fellow DMW artiste, Dremo have been nominated in the Rookie of the Year category. Other artistes in that category are Dice Ailes, Mz Kiss and Terry Apala.

We hope, for Davido’s sake, that either of the two artistes win. But if not, we’re totally here for the ensuing drama.

4. D’banj will shock us by winning an award: Apart from his single, Emergency which is surprisingly successful, D’banj has not had a fantastic year musically. Though he picked up that ‘unfamiliar’ award in the UK, the Koko master’s career has not impressed us one bit this 2016.

He was nominated for an AFRIMA but lost out; now he’s managed to gain three nominations at the Headies and we pray that he wins. The man has come a long way and has not given up putting out music despite the glaring challenges that he faces in his career.

5. The Mavins will be watching from home: They were at the centre of last year’s ruckus with Olamide and his YBNL gang. For reasons we can’t explain, no member of the Mavins crew (except Tiwa Savage) made it to the nominees list, so we expect that they will boycott the event.

They will watch from home (or not) and pretend like it’s okay that none of the younger Mavins (Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Di’Ja) got considered for an award. Like they are not aware that the Headies (hate it or love it) is the biggest music award event in Nigeria.
