Gunmen again attack security patrol team in Yobe

by Isi Esene

Guerrilla attacks on security patrols seem to be the preferred attack tactic by militant groups who are determined on destabilizing the fragile security structure of the country.

Gunmen in Damaturu, Yobe State, today attacked a patrol van conveying security men.

Many of the military security men in the patrol vehicle were said to be injured and receiving medical attention in the hospital.

The Yobe State Police Public Relations officer, Mr. Toyin Gbadegesin, confirmed the incident giving the location of the attack as the Shagari Low-Cost Housing area of the state capital.

He said, “The gunmen laid ambush on a security patrol team using explosive devices around Shagari low cost housing are.”

He also confirmed a separate incident in which another attack was carried out at a police station in another area of the state.

The PPRO said, “There were also gunshots reported around the ‘A’ division police station. We are still working to collect the details of the incident.”

Yobe has been a battleground state between militants suspected to be directly affiliated to the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, and the Nigerian security authorities who are apparently finding it very difficult to contain their excesses.

Only last Friday, the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammed Abali Ibn Mohammed Idrisa, was targeted in a suicide bomb attack which killed his police orderly, he however escaped unhurt.
