Golden Globes 2019: Black Panther makes history as first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Drama

Black Panther

Released back in February and rippling into a cultural phenomenon, Marvel’s Black Panther has been breaking records and making history. Remember when it became the most tweeted movie of all time? Now, following the recent announcement of nominations for the 2019 Golden Globes, Black Panther has become the first ever superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture in the drama category, establishing the blockbuster as a serious contender in next year’s hyper-competitive awards seasons.

The movie also nabbed two other nods: Best Original Score for Ludwig Goransson and Best Original Song for Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s All The Stars. It’s worth mentioning that the only past Golden Globes nomination featuring a superhero film includes Deadpool, which was nominated for Best Motion Picture and Heath Ledger’s posthumous win for The Dark Knight in 2009. Black Panther earned more than $426 million during its opening weekend and has brought more than $1 billion to date. The movie’s three Globe nominations will make it likely to nab some honours in next year’s Oscars – the Golden Golden have always been a good indicator of the kind of movies that will be Academy favourites.

Black Panther, though, is up for some stiff competition – BlacKKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk, and A Star Is Born. The 76th Golden Globes is slated to hold January 6.
