Ryan Picket and his wife Jennifer have been happily married for 10 years. They have 6 children between the ages of six months to eight years old. Their secret according the Ryan is God, and the fact that they are best friends.
They met in a mall in Atlanta and Ryan says, “I thought she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen,” he recalls. “The moment was just breathtaking.” He says that it was true love right from the start.
He proposed after only eight months together and they were soon married. They both said that their friends and family were concerned about the speed of the wedding but that they both prayed to God and were inspired that it was the right thing to do.
In an interview with Essence.com, Ryan and Jennifer told of their love for each other and their happiness with a big family. Their relationship has also been a source of inspiration for millions of Americans who can’t seem to figure out why their relationships don’t work. They are looking for love, but there is the question of whether or not most young people are willing to pay the price and make the sacrifice.
Jennifer said that they both wanted a big family and that Ryan wanted to have girls first. That’s just how it turned out, as they say that God blessed them with their wishes. They have four girls and two boys in a big family, and some wonder if they are done yet. After the last baby, a boy, Jennifer decided that’s enough.
They both admit that it’s difficult sometimes dealing with 6 kids, but they love it. Jennifer says that they try to make sure that the kids are respectful and God loving. She added that they involve the kids in everything they do.
The kids go to Ryan’s home games and sometimes the away games and she says that’s just how they planned it. She also told Essence.com that part of their secret to a happy marriage is having a date every Friday night. This helps them to keep their relationship fresh and also reminds them that loving each other must sometimes be put to the side of just loving their kids.
When they were asked whether getting married so young had drawn criticism from anyone, they both replied yes but because both of them were Christians, and they just knew it was the right thing to do. They took the plunge that is taken by millions of other people and have survived 10 good years. The majority of young people who get married end up divorced, and this problem has worsened with the use of social media.
Although they had planned a big wedding, Ryan just couldn’t wait. So Jennifer never finished her schooling and the two got married. This might not be recommended for women though, since they should have their own education in case the relationship doesn’t work out. The Pickets added that they just watched each other grow up into manhood and womanhood, learning as they went along.
The hardest thing to overcome was their differences in being raised. Ryan said that they both tried to change one another to what they both believed was right. He added that once they found a common ground they were on the right track.
Jennifer added that the hardest part was forgetting her old life and realizing that her husband had to come first. Maybe all of us can learn a few lessons from this impressive couple. We certainly wish them the best.
