Game on: Nairobi prepares bid for 2024 Olympics Games

by Isi Esene

Nairobi, Kenya is putting preparations in motion to bring the Olympics to Africa for the first time in 2024. The East African country hopes to be the first nation this side of the globe to achieve this feat.

In a statement announcing the country’s hosting aspiration at the Kenya National House yesterday, the Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, said the “Republic of Kenya will be starting the process of pitching to host the Games of the 33rd Olympiad in 2024.

“If successful, these Games will be the first ever held in Africa.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will select the host for the 2024 Olympics Games in 2017 with lobbying and bidding starting two years earlier.

Two African countries, South Africa and Egypt, have earlier made unsuccessful bids for the 2004  and 2008 Olympics Games respectively.

The 2016 Games will be held in South America for the first time with Rio de Janeiro hosting the Games.

With Kenya presenting itself for the 2024 Games, will you be rooting for the East African country?
