‘Fulani herdsmen attacks are carried out by terrorists’ – Ijaw youths

The Ijaw Council of Youths Worldwide has questioned the Federal Government’s decision to treat vandals of oil facilities in the Niger Delta as common criminals while turning a blind eye to the incessant killings attributed to the rampaging herdsmen across the country.

In a statement signed by Eric Omare, the spokesperson of the group on Wednesday, April 27, the IYC condemned the killings that has spread across the middle belt, Southwest and recently in Enugu State, Southeast region of the country.

The group labeled such killings as “slaughtering” of innocent Nigerians.

Furthermore, the group refuted the prevailing narrative that the Fulani Herdsmen are responsible for the widespread killing in remote communities stating that the traditional Fulani herdsmen have been carrying out their business in peace for decades without resorting to killing of their hosts.

The group rationalised that the attacks could have been sponsored by mischievous elements who are intent on setting one ethnic group against the other to destabilise the country.

He said: “We are of the view that the attacks are being carried out by terrorists who are disguising themselves as Fulani herdsmen.”

“The traditional Fulani herdsmen have been grazing their cattle for decades in different parts of the country without such attacks until recently when the attacks became persistent.”

The IYC also questioned the government’s attitude towards the killings, describing it as a suspicious and criminal silence.

The group further wondered why the government would promise hell for vandals of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region but keep mute over the widespread deaths of over 100 Nigerians at the hands of the herdsmen.
