The Film Blog: Is an Ego Boyo resurgence upon us?

Last week we brought you news that director and producer Mildred Okwo was hard at work on set of her new project, a TV series currently titled Bankers NGR.

The most interesting tidbit there, (in our opinion, of course) was the presence of Ego Boyo on set.

This is important to us because, Ego Boyo is, well, Ego Boyo. But for the uninitiated, Ego Boyo came to be known by Nigerians as Ann Haastrup in Amaka Igwe’s 1980’s soap opera Checkmate. “Household name” status established, she would resurface in 1996, starring alongside Richard Mofe Damijo (with whom, by the way, she lit up the Checkmate screens) in another Amaka Igwe creation, Violated.

And then she went into proverbial hiding, focusing mainly on running her company, Temple Productions, surfacing now and then only to work as a producer on movies such as Keeping Faith, To Live Again, and Mildred Okwo’s 30 Days.

So news that she’s back in the saddle is welcome to us. It’s also curious, seeing as the last time she was on screen was a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in Okwo’s own The Meeting. So it makes us wonder if this new role is just a favour to someone with whom she clearly enjoys a good relationship. But we can only hope it’s the beginning of something more. If you need convincing it’s possible, just look at Sola Sobowale, who may not have taken a clear step back from the industry, but is seeing a reintroduction to mainstream audiences through a cracking role in Africa Magic’s Hustle.

Or even Richard Mofe Damijo, Boyo’s one-time on-screen lover who himself stepped away from the screen for a fair bit of time but has pulled off a comeback that has seen unprecedented success.

We eagerly await her next move.
