Police raid Abuja nightclubs, arrests over 70 women

About two weeks after police officers arrested 30 women at different night clubs in Abuja, another 70 women have been arrested. The latest arrests were done on Saturday night and the victims were taken to and detained at a police station, a witness said.

Return home and face security challenges – PDP tells Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to end his “private visit” abroad and immediately return home to face the deteriorated security situation in the country.

In a statement by its spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan on Thursday, the PDP said it was completely unacceptable for President Buhari to “practically” abandon his responsibilities, as the Commander-In-Chief, at least for now, to pursue “unexplained” private matters in foreign lands.

Court adjourns Adeleke’s eligibility case to May 8

The court of Appeal sitting over the case eligibility of Senator Ademola Adeleke in the September 2018 governorship election has been adjourned till May 8, 2019.

The appeal court on Thursday adjourned the case to enable it to hear Senator Adeleke’s appeal alongside that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

178 reps-elect endorse Gbajabiamila for speaker

Supporters of Femi Gbajabiamila say 178 newly elected members of the house of representatives have endorsed him for speakership The incoming lawmakers endorsed Gbajabiamila during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Gbajabiamila is the current majority leader of the house and is favoured by both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari to become speaker in the ninth assembly.

Again, house of reps summons Buhari over insecurity

The House of Representatives on Thursday reinvited President Muhammadu Buhari to address the chamber on what his administration is doing about the high spate of insecurity across Nigeria. The House had unanimously on April 11, 2019, adopted a motion with the mandate to issue a query to the President, asking him to explain the spate of insecurity under his administration within 48 hours.

IPOB declares sit-at-home on May 30

The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared Thursday May, 30th sit-at-home in states under former Eastern and Middle Belt regions respectively.

In a statement on Thursday by the spokesman of the group, Emma Powerful, the pro-biafra group said that the essence of the sit-at-home was in commemoration of Biafra fallen heroes.

UBEC chairman, daughter regain freedom

Muhammed Mahmood, chairman, board of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and his daughter have been released by their abductors.

Their release was confirmed by Hussain Danladi, one of Mahmood’s aides. Mahmood and his daughter were abducted along Kaduna-Abuja road on Monday afternoon while travelling from Kaduna to the federal capital territory (FCT).

Senate passes 2019 budget, raises estimates by 10bn

The Senate has passed the 2019 Appropriation Bill, adding N10bn to the Service Wide Vote‎. The national budget was consequently raised from N8.906tn to N8.916‎tn.

Nigerian senators, reps to pocket N23.7 billion as gratuity, allowances

Nigerian lawmakers have allocated N23.7 billion as severance gratuity for outgoing lawmakers of the National Assembly. The sum will also cover allowances for incoming legislators, their aides, funds for National Assembly induction and inauguration of the 9th Senate.

The benefit was captured as a separate line item in the 2019 appropriation bill passed by the lawmakers on Tuesday. The amount was broken down to N23, 678, 770, 079 in the bill.

FG secures release of Zainab Aliyu from Saudi detention

Personal Assistant to the President on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, has said that the Federal Government has secured the release of a Nigerian student, Zainab Aliyu, who was detained in Saudi on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Zainab, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, was arrested after a banned drug, Tramadol, was found in her bag. She claimed it was planted in her luggage by unknown persons.

PDP calls for collaboration of parties to rescue Nigeria from APC

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called for collaboration of all political parties in the country to ”rescue Nigeria from alleged misrule of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.”

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Diran Odeyemi, in a statement Tuesday, explained that three incidents that happened recently had shown that APC would never change its style of governance, which he claimed had brought Nigeria to her knees.
