‘Immunity doesn’t prevent us from freezing Fayose’s account’ – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said it has the liberty to freeze the accounts of any individual, including that of a state governor.

The anti-graft agency made the submission to Vanguard Newspapers, while attempting to justify the freezing of the personal account of Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose.

The governor had described the embargo placed on his Zenith Bank account as illegal while stating that he’s entitled to immunity as a result of his position.

Fayose also urged the Federal Government to wait until 2018 before opening an investigation into his dealings.

However, the spokesperson of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, says Fayose’s immunity does not prevent the anti-graft agency from investigating suspicious transactions traced to his account.

“Immunity does not prevent EFCC from investigating suspicious accounts of those enjoying immunity and Fayose cannot be an exception,” Uwujaren was quoted to have said.

Meanwhile, a report by SR infers that Fayose’s account was frozen in connection with over N1.2 billion he allegedly received from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, to facilitate his re-election as governor.
