How he hijacked a bullion van and everything else we know about billionaire kidnapper, Evans

It’s important to clarify from the start that we’ll never really know everything about this man or the case of this man who has been accused of serial kidnapping. Since his widely publicized arrest by the Nigerian police last weekend, Evans the billionaire kidnapper has been a bottomless well of information for news sites across the country.

Save for the viral and powerful #HallelujahChallenge that has Christians across Nigeria united for worship purposes, the biggest name on the news this week is Evans, the arrested abductor with real name, Chukwudumeje George Onwuamadike.

Just because we hope no one talks about this in the new week or flashes the suspect’s photo in our faces until he’s proven guilty, here’s brief a guide to help you understand everything about this developing story of notorious kidnapper, Evans:

When news of his arrest first broke, we learned Evans had been on police watchlist for a while and was finally nabbed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport just as he was about to flee the country but it turned out he was actually picked up after the police had trailed him to one of his Magodo apartments. It wasn’t that easy though!

From what we’ve read, Evans is married with five children, all of whom are out of the country, but the man has a number of other women that have been described as his girlfriends and one of whom was instrumental to his final arrest. The police had been aware of his activities for a number of years as he had been the mastermind of some of the biggest kidnappings in the Lagos metropolis. Some unconfirmed reports even claim that a N30million bounty had been placed on him and was announced by the star of the arrest, Abba Kyari, leader of the IGP team on the case.

The police had tracked the ladies – Amaka, Ngozi and Ijeoma – and had located Amaka’s apartment in Okota, Lagos where Evans intended to visit on that fateful day. Amaka was set to be the bait but it appeared Evans had gotten the inkling that she was setting him up so rather than spend the night in her apartment as planned, he only picked her up from a nearby spot, drove her off while threatening to kill her for ratting out on him and ended up in an accident where he abandoned his Grand Cherokee jeep and paid Amaka to return home.

The police team however had other plans, as an informant’s tip off had led them to his guarded Magodo apartment where he was going to pick up a few items before fleeing the country. It was in the apartment they finally grabbed him several attempts to escape.

Evans has been described as “the most brilliant, richest and crafty kidnapper in the country’s history”. To substantiate the claims of his wealth, Evans revealed that he receives ransom from families of his victims in dollars. It was just a way of branding his business and it has been a major success considering he has received one million dollars as ransom more than once. Although his total worth is not known but Evans seems to spend heavily on his business.

Sources claim he owns two special Vertu phones that cost over N4million. His investment in these devices plus other Thuraya phones were to aid his elusiveness. He also claims to a own a wristwatch he purchased for $170,000 and pays the boy who guards his victims N2million per operation. Photos of his luxury apartments in Magodo are also a testament:

Newsmen reached some members of Evans’ family and from the interview with his father, Evans did not spare any of his wealth for his family. The man, Stephen Onwuamadike claims to sell pigs to survive and can barely put food on his own table. Mr Stephen said, “I heard about all the millions, and I said to myself, do I have such manner of rich son and the roof over my house is leaking,…“.

In an interview with Vanguard, Evans’ wife, Uchenna who is said to be in Ghana with his children, revealed that she had no idea her husband had such money or dealt in such business. “I have never seen him as a rich man. While with him, we made sure we had all we wanted to eat and that’s all.   I can’t remember seeing any sign of affluence in him. He is not a proud man and he has been wearing one sandal and slippers for long now.  He does not go for parties. In fact, I have never suspected him as a criminal“, Uchenna said.

Evans did not only deal in kidnapping, he also traded in drugs and carried out robbery attacks. He told reporters that he led his gang to hijack a bullion van from which they carted a sum of N200million. And that was one! On another occasion, “we forced the driver and his police escort to open the van.  We got N80m from the van and I was given N1.8m as my share“. AK-47 and AK-49 rifles among other weapons and ammunition were found in the apartment where he was finally arrested.
