Probably the most popular lawmaker after Senate President Bukola Saraki, Dino Melaye representing Kogi West in the upper chamber is on his way to becoming a brand.

This year alone, Melaye has been embroiled in the most controversial issues in the country.

From his certificate saga, to launching of an anti-corruption book, revealing an alleged fraudulent practice by MTN and escaping assassination.

The most recent is an attempt being made by his constituents to recall him from the Senate – a process which is still ongoing.

Here is a timeline of all activities that have occurred as moves are being made to recall Melaye from the upper chamber.

April 15, 2017: Dino Melaye claimed that some unknown gunmen  attacked his residence in Ayetoro-Gbede, Ijumu local government area of the state.

According to Melaye, the assassins shot 200 rounds into his building.

He also added that the “attempt is being championed by the chairman of my local government. He had said it many times that he will do everything to stop me from coming home. Besides, those assailants when leaving were chanting ‘We will know if it’s Taofiq that owns the land or you.”

April 17, 2017: The Kogi State Police Command said it has arrested seven persons in connection with the assassination attempt on Senator Dino Melaye.

The police said a black Jeep suspected to have been used during the operation has been found.

The vehicle was discovered alongside a cache of ammunition at the Odokoro home of the administrator of Ijumu local government area of the state, Taofiq Isa, by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

April 18, 2017: Melaye said the silence of state Governor, Yahaya Bello over the assassination attempt on his life speaks volume.

In response, Yahaya Bello said the senator is yet to inform him about the alleged assassination attempt on his life.

April 19, 2017: The police said it arrested Taofiq Isa, administrator of Ijumu Local Governmental Area of Kogi State over his alleged involvement in the assassination attempt on Senator Dino Melaye.

April 20, 2017: Taofiq Isa, the administrator of Ijumu local government area of Kogi State said he was never arrested by the police over the alleged attack on Melaye.

April 23, 2017: Melaye directly accused Yahaya Bello of plotting to assassinate him for fighting for the state’s workers and pensioners.

May 29, 2017: Dino Melaye outlined reasons why Yahaya Bello must resign.

May 30, 2017: An audio tape revealing how Senator Dino Melaye allegedly interfered with his election case in 2015 was released

Melaye allegedly compromised Justice Akoh Ikpeme, the tribunal judge who handled his election case in 2015.

June 2, 2017: Melaye sued Yahaya Bello, the State House of Assembly and others for not conducting local government election.

The other defendants in the suit include the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Kogi State Local Government Service Commission and the State Independent Electoral Commission.

June 2, 2017: Hundreds of constituents from Melaye’s Senatorial district marched to INEC’s headquarters in Lokoja demanding his recall from the upper chamber.

June 5, 2017: The senator said the tape of him bribing a Tribunal judge, Justice Akoh Ikpeme is a ‘satanic collabo’ between SaharaReporters, Senator Smart Adeyemi and others.

June 10, 2017: Melaye described the process to recall him from the upper legislative chamber as “shooting the moon and boxing the air.”

He alleged that Bello was spending one billion naira to facilitate his recall.

June 12, 2017: Supporters of Dino Melaye and those of the state’s governor, Yahaya Bello clashed in Lokoja, the state capital.

June 12, 2017: Melaye claimed he escaped another assassination attempt in Lokoja while addressing his supporters.

On the same day, some protesting youths blocked the road to the hometown of Dino Melaye, while awaiting his convoy.

June 13, 2017: Melaye urged the Senate to declare a State of Emergency in Kogi State.

June 15, 2017: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it is unaware of moves to recall Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye.

The commission outlined steps required to recall a senator.

June 20, 2017: About 52.3 percent of registered voters, representing 188,588 persons in Kogi West senatorial district approved the recall of Dino Melaye from the senate.

June 21, 2017: Melaye threatened that move to recall him from the upper legislative chamber will send many appointees to jail.

June 22, 2017: INEC acknowledged receipt of the petition and confirmed that the recall process will kick off with a verification of the petitioners.

June 23, 2017:  Melaye said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not communicated with him over his planned recall from the Senate.

He also confirmed that he has filed a case against INEC over moves to recall him.
