Are you emotionally intelligent? | Here are 6 signs to be sure

We about to get really deep in here. Ever heard of being emotionally intelligent, or emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include three skills: emotional awareness; the ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving; and the ability to manage emotions, which includes regulating your own emotions and cheering up or calming down other people.

Basically, emotionally intelligence affects how we manage behavior, navigate day to day life and activities, and make personal decisions to achieve positive results. The thing about emotional intelligence is that compared to intelligence quotient (I.Q), it is quite intangible and can be quite difficult to test and figure out how much you have or if you have any at all( I doubt this is possible though).

Here are some signs that you have high EQ:

1. You’re Genuinely Curious About People

Emotionally intelligent people are interested generally curious about people whether they’re introverted or extroverted. Their curiosity is the product of empathy, which is one of the most significant gateways to having a high E.Q. The more you care about other people and what they’re going through, the more curios you are about them.

2. You Identify Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Emotionally intelligent people know what they’re good at and what they suck at. They also know what works for them and the environment that enable them to succeed. Having a high EQ means you know your strengths and you know how to use them to your full advantage while keeping your weaknesses from holding you back.

3. You have thick skin

When you have a deep knowledge of who you are, it’s difficult for someone to say something that would prick your ego or get under your skin. Self-confidence and being open-minded helps creates a pretty thick skin, the ability to take a joke or even make fun of yourself means you are able to mentally draw the line between humor and degradation.

4. You can Say No (to Yourself and Others)

Emotional intelligence means knowing how to exercise self-control, delaying gratification, and avoiding impulsive action. Research shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress or even depression When it’s time to say no, emotionally intelligent people avoid phrases such as “I don’t think I can” or “I’m not certain.”

5. You Won’t Let Anyone Limit Your Joy

Once your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from the opinions of other people, you  no longer have power over your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that they’ve done, they don’t let anyone’s opinions or snide remarks take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a pinch of salt.

6. You do not entertain Negative Self-Talk

The more you think negative thoughts, the more power you give them over you. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brain’s natural tendency to perceive threats (inflating the frequency or severity of an event). Emotionally intelligent people separate their thoughts from the facts in order to escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive, new outlook.

So that’s it! Find any signs similar to your attitude? Are you emotionally intelligent?
