According to the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, a new case of the Ebola virus disease has been recorded in Nigeria.
On Monday, 8 September, Chukwu disclosed that the new case of the virus is the fiancé of one of the primary contacts of the index case, Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American who brought the virus to Nigeria.
He, however, stated that the primary contact had made a fully recovery. The minister said, “The new case brings the total number of Ebola cases in Nigeria to 19 with seven people dead from the disease while 10 others have recovered.”
He said Nigeria currently has only one Ebola patient, the wife of Mr. Enemuo, whom he said would soon be discharged after making full recovery. He also refuted claims that Ebola has been recorded in any other state or city in Nigeria.
Chukwu revealed that the sister of the Port Harcourt doctor, Ikechukwu Enemuo, who secretly treated one of Mr. Sawyer’s primary contact in a hotel, has been discharged, after full recovery.
As it stands, the total number of people under surveillance in Lagos have reduced to 27 while Port Harcourt stands at 477.
