Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai is many things, but he is not one, who is afraid of making and taking the hard decisions. In October, as part of his resolve to drain the state’s education sector of deadwood, teachers in its primary schools were told to embark on a test. 33,000 teachers sat for an exam meant for pupils in primary four. 21,780 failed. In the YNaija Effectiveness Ranking, el-Rufai takes the top spot in the week under review.
Following the high failure rate, el-Rufai decided to relieve them of their duties and hire new teachers. This decision did not go down well with the teachers and Labour unions in the state who accused the governor of insensitivity. The teachers demonstrated against the state’s government decision, carrying placards, destroying properties in an attempt to blackmail the governor to renege on his decision. Some commentators labelled el-Rufai a dictator, while some urged him to retrain the teachers rather than sack them. Not one to be blackmailed, the state government released some scripts of the test taking by the teachers. The replies to basic questions will leave you cringing, as the teachers are not only unqualified, they have absolutely no business handling the formative years of a child’s education.
It’s rather disheartening that some people are sympathetic to these teachers. Every politician in the country ought to emulate el-Rufai. The civil service is over-bloated with many unqualified persons receiving salaries they are not qualified for.

He was confronted at Chatham House by students studying under the state’s scholarship scheme, who urged him to ensure that their scholarships were paid for. On his return to the country, the governor’s convoy clashed with that of his predecessor and Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, as both men traded blames as their security details clashed.
