Does anti-Igbo song play to Nnamdi Kanu’s drums?

by Alexander O. Onukwue

While he has condemned it as “evil, satanic, and pre-genocidal”, the anti-Igbo song said to be circulating parts of Northern Nigeria adds more fuel to the agitations of Nnamdi Kanu for Igbos to form a Biafran State.

The song is another pointer for him to re-echo one of his staple messages of “an impending doom for our people [Igbos] living in the North.” Kanu, who has flouted literally every one of his bail conditions, has had more direct contact with his audience and followers, and the new audio which hurled loathsome words at Igbos seem to add more to his armoury as he aims to lead Biafra away from Nigeria.

“So, the best they can do is to leave the North and come home so that we can have our Biafra and build an economy capable of assimilating and absorbing all their potential and creative abilities,” Kanu said.

The release of the audio comes roughly eight weeks before the October 1 date given by the Northern youth groups for Igbos in the North to evacuate. The five-minute long song appears a follow up on the declaration made in June. Recorded in Hausa, it is supposed to be understood by ordinary, non-educated persons in the North who will take on the negative sentiments expressed, creating tension and putting more pressure on the Igbo persons living in Northern parts of the country.

Kanu’s call for Igbos to leave the North and return to the South East will strike a chord with his supporters in the East who attend his conferences and parades in thousands. Recent gatherings at Umuahia and Owerri have attracted massive crowds of people, donning the red, black and green colours of the IPOB movement.

Should there be a significant number of persons relocating from the North as a result of this audio, Kanu will feel like his words are having more influence and will be emboldened to continue to spread his Biafran mission.

The anti-Igbo song is a message of hate, but one cannot but help think it will make Nnamdi Kanu more of a freedom fighter in the eyes of his followers.
