What Dino Melaye said on the floor of the Senate yesterday should worry you

On Monday, there he was, photos all over the interview, rolling on the floor, falling under all kinds of anointing, praising his “maker”.

At plenary session on Tuesday while senators argued over a bill prohibiting sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary educational institutions, the man representing Kogi West had something to say. That some men do not have the “anointing” to resist sexual harassment.

No, he actually said the words “anointing”.

“I support wholeheartedly that this bill be enacted to stand as deterrent to lecturers who take advantage of female students,” he added, by way of aligning himself with reason.

“However, the seductive and provocative‎ dresses of our students who enter offices of lecturers who have no anointing to resist sexual temptation should be discouraged.”

So that was how a Senator of the Federal Republic came on the legislative floor to blame the victim, and defend the aggressor.

The bill prescribes five-year jail term for lecturers who engage in sexual relationship with students and sanction students who falsely accuse lecturers of sexual harassment.

The bill passed second reading at the Senate on Wednesday.

And so we thank God for small mercies.
