by Alexander O. Onukwue

The process for the recall of Dino Melaye from the Senate has began in earnest.

This follows the acknowledgement by INEC that they have received the petition from the registered voters in Kogi West Senatorial district. In a statement, INEC stated that they will announce the date for the commencement of verification on Monday, July 3.

“In accordance with the INEC guidelines for the recall of members of the National Assembly, the Commission has formally acknowledged the receipt of the petition to the petitioner’s representatives and has conveyed a letter notifying Senator Melaye of our receipt of the petition” INEC’s statement of June 22nd had stated.

About 180,000 signatures have been collected and submitted to the Electoral body, demanding that the Senator, elected in 2015 under the platform of the APC, should not see out the remainder of his term till 2019. The Kogi Senator, who has come under fire for various controversies during his period in the National Assembly, from the Green to the Red Chamber, will be the first seating member of parliament to be successfully returned if the process is successful.

In accordance with the constitution, INEC will have to conduct a referendum within 90 days from the receipt of the petition to determine the fate of the Senator.
