‘Criminal attacks’ on Nigerian High Commission in Ghana sparks uproar

Reports of violent attacks on the residential quarters of the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana spurred conversation on social media Sunday, with many weighing in on the unfortunate incident.

The newly constructed High Commission in Ghana is reported to have been invaded and demolished by unknown armed men causing massive destruction to the impressive building. Alongside this complex, some residential quarters were also destroyed.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, not only confirmed the violent attacks but strongly condemned it as well. According to a statement he published on Twitter, details of the incident reveals that a bulldozer was used to break down the buildings. He also stated that the Ghanaian Government has been contacted and the need for urgent action to find the perpetrators and provide adequate protection for Nigerians and their property, has been communicated.

Reacting in anger to the news, some have tagged the incidence as a xenophobic attack and a ‘slap on the face’ for Nigeria; the Giant of Africa.

Many claimed that this attack is a call for war on the part of the Ghanaian government. They buttressed the premise with the fact that international rules designate an attack on an embassy or high commission as an attack on the country it represents.

Speculations are rife that the demolition was carried out because a businessman claimed ownership of part of the land on which the residential quarters stood and had gone ahead to destroy part of the establishment.

Nigerians in Ghana are currently protesting these attacks and demanding justice be met out in accordance with the present situation.
