#YNaijaChurch100: Mercy Chinwo, Banky W, Sam Adeyemi | See the 100 Most Influential People in Christian Ministry in Nigeria

The Christian tradition demands that we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Easter) who is believed to have died – for our sins – three days earlier. The global community continues the conversation on why the one who had come to save the world had to leave, and quite early. Yet, it is also a time when Christians celebrate the birth of a religion that is known to be a way through to eternal glory. In this light, we acknowledge the contributions of Nigerian believers who use their voices, platforms, lives to promote a divine agenda and wield divine influence in the process. It’s no news that Nigeria is positioned to drive the end-time revival and these people do their best to ensure that human spirits are God-driven and there’s a real-time connection between modernity, religion, and God.

This year, we spotlight people like Olubankole Wellington, Godman Akinlabi, Mercy Chinwo and many others who are on this non-exhaustive list, who we regard as vanguards of the faith and the ones who employ the resources of social media or other digital platforms (and traditional platforms) to converse on existent doctrines; either questioning and providing solutions and explaining ‘stay it’ reasons.

These are the men and women who are the guardians of the faith:

                     Imisioluwa Owolabi

Imisi is a gospel minister and a prophet to nations with a mandate of transformation and the propagation of the Kingdom of God (Jeremiah 1). Imisi believes in the absolute authority of the Bible and in Jesus as the standard for living. Her public ministerial work began in 2006 when she started a prayer chain with some friends via BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) and email. Later that year, she started holding weekly prayer meetings with ladies. These prayer meetings metamorphosed into a ministry called Household of Faith Fellowship – for young people and lovers of Christ. The first meeting was held on June 10, 2007, and this meeting held monthly until it was renamed Hope365 in 2015 – a ministry which currently has several expressions. Those monthly meetings are now held quarterly and called ‘When Friends Pray’.

And it is during this that he founded Koinonia (Eternity Network International – ENI), a gospel organisation, charged with the duty to transform lives by revealing several mysterious dimensions of God through worship and through the decoding of scriptures. And when he was asked about his controversial religious ideas and the criticisms, he said, “They misunderstood Jesus, so who am I?” He calls himself the ‘express will of God on earth’. Kenny believes in bridging the extremities between art and spirit. His affinity for alternative rock music, ‘afrocentric vocalisms’ and strong use of the Yoruba language garnishes his sound. He also believes that gospel artistes are strong tools of evangelism and that gospel music should remain at the forefront of kingdom expansion. Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya co-founded The Fountain of Life Church in 1992 with a stated vision “to teach men and women the art of building successful relationships and the principles of leadership so they can be all they are created to be.” With a membership of less than 20 at inception, the Church has today become one of the most influential Pentecostal denominations in the country with a congregation of over 8,000 at its headquarters, and has nurtured and released scores of local assemblies across the country. In addition, it has missions in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Switzerland and South Africa. It also has missions in Kenya, Central Africa Republic, Republic of Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Republic of Benin and Togo. At the core of his ministry is building relationships, developing leadership and enabling (or encouraging) enterprise. Pastor Taiwo has mentored, nurtured and supported scores of thriving ministries, ministers and individuals who willingly surrender to his tutelage. A good number of men and women whose lives have been shaped by his ministry are today occupying prominent positions in government, commerce, industry and other spheres of life.
