How Chile defeated Argentina to win another ‘Copa America’ trophy (WATCH)

For Chile, the last two championship finals against Argentina has been a hit back to back, while for the Argentines, it was another year to mope after losing the second consecutive Copa America final on penalties.

Both Argentina and Chile were reduced to 10 men in a heated first half as Marcos Rojo and Marcelo Diaz were sent off.

In the second half, neither team could break the deadlock after 120 minutes of play in front of more than 82,000 fans at MetLife Stadium.

It all boiled down to a shootout for for the second year running.

Chile however, came out on top again following the 4-2 outcome on spot kicks as Argentina would have to wait longer for a major trophy in 23 years.

Chile’s goalkeeper Claudio Bravo proved to be the hero of the clash. He kept out Sergio Aguero’s extra time effort and saved Lucas Biglia‘s spot-kick after Lionel Messi had blasted his penalty into orbit.

Francisco Silva then stepped up and scored, to win the Chileans their second consecutive final.

The loss makes it Argentina’s third defeat in a row in a final after defeats in last year’s Copa America and the 2014 World Cup.

Although Arturo Vidal missed his opening penalty, Chile were able to emerge champions once more thanks to successful spot-kicks from Nicolas Castillo, Charles Aranguiz, Beausejour and Silva.

Watch how it all happened.
