Children in IDP camps are sold for N10,000 – Report

The International Centre for Investigative Reporting and other partner organizations has revealed its findings that show that children in IDP camps are sold for as little as N10,000.

The organization alleged that those involved in the trafficking ring include government officials and some ‘Lords’ in the camps.

Available data shows that the children trafficked are aged between 5 and 15 years, and were sold for between N10,000 and N100,000.

There are currently thirteen IDP camps in Nigeria with Borno, Maiduguri LGA hosting the highest number of IDPs. As at June 2016, there are about 2,066,783 IDPs in Abuja, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Nassarawa, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara State.

According to the report aid workers allege that there is “a conspiracy of silence” as no one seems to be speaking about the development.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other related Matters (NAPTIP) is said to be unaware of the development.
