Call for the suspension of arrested judges unnecessary, hasty – CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed on Saturday described as unnecessary and hasty calls by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) that the National Judicial Council (NJC) suspends judges arrested by the DSS.

Mohammed said this in a statement by one of his Special Assistants, H. S. Sa’eed.

The CJN said the DSS was yet to forward any complaints against the arrested judges.

However, the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria in a meeting on Saturday had supported the call by NBA that the judges be suspended.

The NBA President, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), had made the call on Thursday.
Mahmoud said, “We therefore strongly recommend that, without prejudice to the innocence or otherwise of the Judges involved in the ongoing investigations, they should recuse themselves from further judicial functions or required to proceed on compulsory leave until their innocence is fully and completely established or until the conclusion of all judicial or disciplinary proceedings”.
