Buhari the Londoner: When will our president return home?

by Wareez Odunayo

Nigerians are currently in limbo on the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari who has been in London on medical vacation for over 90 days.

Some are of the view that the President should focus on his health since he has handed over to his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo while others feel he has overstayed his welcome in the United Kingdom and should return home with immediate effect.

Worse is the fact that he is yet to reveal what exactly ails him. His media aides have made matters unbearable as they insist that Buhari (the man over 15 million Nigerians voted for in 2015) is a “private citizen”.

The 1999 Constitution as amended is not specific on how long a president can stay out of the country at a stretch.

One of Buhari’s foremost critic, Ekiti governor, Ayodele Fayose on Tuesday said the president should be appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs since he has refused to resign.

On August 7, 2017, some concerned Nigerians like Charles Oputa, AKA Charly Boy, National Coordinator, Foundation For True Freedom and Good Leadership, Deji Adeyanju and others began a sit out to demand Buhari’s return.

However, Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central, an avid supporter of Buhari has come to the rescue of the ailing President, urging the protesters to drop their placards and pick up their prayer books for the ailing President.

Nigerians are increasingly worried about Mr Buhari’s health, with the hope that his case is not similar to late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who died in office in 2010, after a lengthy illness which saw him fly to Germany and Saudi Arabia for treatment.

For how long can Nigeria’s ailing President stay in London for medical treatment? Will it be till eternity or after the expiration of his first term in 2019? Or is Buhari just having an excursion in the UK?

The onus is on the man himself to either return home for the good of the nation. And if he is not fit to lead, he should use every shred of the little integrity he has to resign and free us from the shackle of uncertainty.
