Bribery scandal: Farouk Lawan fired from House Education Committee chairmanship

The Speaker, House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal has sacked Farouk Lawan as Chairman, House Committee on Education.

Lawan who was previously on suspension as Chairman of House Adhoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy Regime is currently facing trial for allegedly receiving a bribe of $620,000 from oil magnate, Femi Otedola.

Tambuwal has also announced the appointment of Aminu Suleiman (PDP, Kano) as Lawan’s replacement.

New Chairman, Sulaiman before his appointment was deputy chairman of the committee on labour and productivity. Hon. Rose Okoh (PDP, Cross River), deputy chairman of the Education committee had covered the position till Thursday when Tambuwal announced the official replacement.

The appointment takes immediate effect.

Lawan was first suspended in June 2012 at a special meeting of the House after Otedola alleged that the former chairman collected a $620,000 bribe from him to facilitate the removal of his companies: Zenon oil and Synopsis international from the list of erring companies in the subsidy regime, news report confirm.

Subsequently, Lawan was temporarily suspended from being chairman committee on education as well as chairman of the subsidy probe committee awaiting the result of the investigation of its committee on ethics and privileges which began last year.

According to reports, Lawan for the time pending when he’s cleared will serve as a floor member despite heading the committee for more than 12 years and being in the House since 1999.
