Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson set to complete £66.8m transfer to Liverpool

Reports suggest that Brazil International goalkeeper Alisson Becker is set to complete a world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper to Liverpool, valued at £66.8m from Italian side Roma – ahead of a medical today.

What might catch many people’s attention, however, is the money that is being splashed around for a goalkeeper – it is certainly a lot of money. But Alisson has proved his quality at international level, ensuring he got the number one spot for Brazil at the World Cup ahead of Manchester City goalkeeper, Ederson.

There is no doubt that transfer fees have been greatly inflated since PSG opened the pandora’s box and signed Brazilian Neymar for €222m in 2017. The market has gone nuts since then and all the top clubs, asides for very few like Juventus have to pay more than the player’s economic value.

Traditionally, big investments in the noble league of goalkeepers always bear dividend dating back to Juventus’s astronomical fee for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001 for £32.6m and more recently David De Gea transfer to Manchester United for a then British record for a goalkeeper at £18.9m. Jordan Pickford’s transfer to Everton for £25m and finally Ederson to Manchester City for £34.7m, but Alisson’s transfer to Liverpool more than doubles the former record fee – it is likely to bear dividend – he is certainly better than Loris Kairus.

Alisson was bought by Roma from Internacional in Brazil for a £7.2m fee in 2016 and only just became a regular at the side. He saved 80% of the shots to his goal in the Serie A last season – a league high and he has proved he has real quality and dexterity on his feet and with his hands for a 6’4 player.

The 25-year-old will be Liverpool’s fourth signing of the season after Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri. Liverpool’s coach Jurgen Klopp seems to have played all his cards for this season and the signing of Nabil Fekir from Lyon seems more and more unlikely. It is expected that Klopp has fixed the defensive issues that have plagued his Liverpool side by the addition of Virgil Van Dijk in January for £75m – a world record fee for a defender and now Alisson to replace Loris Kairus – I am a happy camper with this imminent transfer.
