Boko Haram fighters have reportedly killed five Nigerian soldiers, injuring five others in a raid on a military post in Borno on Tuesday.

According to a military officer who spoke to AFP on the condition of anonymity, the terrorists loyal to the Abu Musab Al-Barnawi faction stormed a checkpoint near Sabon Garin Kimba village about 140 kilometres (90 miles) from Maiduguri on Monday night.

“Our men were outgunned and outnumbered. We lost five men in the fight. Five more were injured,” the military officer said.

According to Mustapha Karimbe, a member of the civilian JFT, the terrorists burnt three armoured cars along with makeshift sheds at the checkpoint.

“The terrorists attacked the soldiers… and remained in the village for three hours before they withdrew,” said Karimbe.
