‘Best Friends in the World’ takes on the petty dramas of secondary school

Best Friends In the world

What would a web show set in a preppy Nigerian school look like? That is what Best Friends in the World tries to answer.

The show is set in an unnamed preppy secondary school with a small but uniformly attractive student body, who wear Ankara uniforms and seem to all come from wealth. The show runners don’t really invest in creating a believable backstory for the characters, explaining what their complex relationships are and why everyone revolves around Olive, the show’s protagonist and queen bee, popular for her grades (as is expected from a Nigerian show).

Once you’re able to get past that initial lack of a backstory or motivations for most of the characters, the show is pretty enjoyable as Olive, Adam circle around each other and Maria, a new transfer student who poses a threat to Olive’s academic superiority is thrown into the mix.

Best friends in the world is already 6 episodes in and there are a number of reasons I want to root for the show. All the actors on the show are relatively unknown, and though they have some learning to do as it concerns their acting, they do a good job of bringing their characters to life.

More importantly they don’t look out of place in the world of Best Friends in the World. Second, the themes of the show are pretty wholesome, the drama is age appropriate and there are important moral lessons at the end of each episode. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but Neptune’s, the company who produces the show, knows their audience. Finally, the characters are allowed to experiment with ideas around adulthood and change their beliefs, the show doesn’t treat attraction as a taboo, which is another important conversation we should be having.

There already 6 episodes out of the show, so there’s a lot to binge to get a sense of Olive’s world. Check out the first episode here:
