Before laying claim to the ‘Odogwu’ title, here is what Nigerians expect from you

It is no news that the tension between many Nigerian artists is often not expressed, and when they eventually are explored, the aftermath lives on between the artists and their fans for long. The story of the diss between self-acclaimed ‘African Giant’ and performer, Burna Boy, and fellow singer, Davido is no news as it all escalated out of nowhere and has caused many to take sides and express what it meant to them as fans.

While many schooled Burna Boy for subtly attacking Davido and tagging him talentless and dependent on his father for fame, Twitter users have also expressed that even though Burna Boy has attained the heights he has reached now, there are certain things that are expected of him.

Burna’s diss followed a tweet by Davido that expressed that he and Wizkid are the greatest of all time, a thing many other artists have tagged themselves over the years. Following his diss to Davido, the self-acclaimed ‘Odogwu’ (Odogwu – Meaning, greatest in Igbo Language) has been schooled by both fans and followers on the things that someone with the Igbo title is expected to do and not to do.

For many who took part in this trend, they pointed out some things they believe anyone claiming to be ‘Odogwu’ should have, certain characteristics that they should portray and certain things that they should not even say.

Burna Boy took the Odogwu title in his recent project where he tapped into the Igbo culture in both the visual content and lyrical content of his 2020 single of the same name, and many are pointing out that he is not living up to the name.

While a few others were of the opinion that Burna Boy has all the right to say whatever he wants to say as people are only overreacting because of the achievements the singer has bagged over the years. This is not the first time that Burna will be causing a stir with his fellow artiste, but many other fans have pointed out that it is becoming too much for the artist as they also say that it is because of what he has achieved.

In the light of this, his fans believe the main issue for many Nigerians who now tag him as a narcissist and proud person is the 2020 Grammy Awards nomination he bagged.
