#BBNaija: Omashola and Mike prove that men still don’t understand consent and respect for women’s boundaries

After DJ Lambo did a decent job in presiding over last night’s party, the Big Brother Naija house devolved into chaos. It was Tuoyo’s birthday and Mike thought it was a splendid idea to slather some cake on Tacha’s hair, while Omashola tried to walk in on Thelma while she was in the shower. Some other mini disputes ensued in the house but nothing was as charged as the scenes between the aforementioned housemates.

Blaming it on the alcohol that Mike and Omashola consumed is an easy cop-out, and it’s just another just way we have normalised men’s obnoxious behaviour towards women. Importantly, it shows yet again that straight men can’t grasp consent and respect women’s boundaries. To them, this is really impossible. Up until now, Mike had worn a halo of perfection and swaggering cool grace – within a short time he’s attracted a bloc of fans generating fervent online support plastered with his Instagram-perfect pictures.

But last night, for me at least, changed the way I saw him as Tacha ”overreacted” to his cake abuse. Omashola’s trying to get into the shower while Thelma was there is hardly surprising. His appeal as a ”real” and ”down to earth” housemate because he communicates mostly in pidgin has sharpened into the hazy face of toxic masculinity over the weeks. Furthermore, I watched as Tuoyo cajoled Esther into coming to the jacuzzi because it was his birthday. On reflection, it felt like the way Nigerian men coerce women into having sex. This thought stayed with me for a long time.

As the show gears towards another eviction today, with four male housemates up for elimination and one likely to go if the universe is fair, perhaps the house will do with a little less toxicity.
