#BBNaija: Kemen pens one silly apology and Nigerians are already bowing at his feet

Disqualified and disgraced Big Brother housemate, Kemen just made his first statement since he got booted out of the house on Sunday evening.

We haven’t forgotten already the shameful act that led to his disqualification from the show. We remember how in the early hours of Sunday while he and fellow housemate, Tboss slept next to each other, Kemen creeped out of bed to check on the surveillance cameras in the room to see if anyone was focused on their bed, crept back in after ensuring they weren’t being watched, raised the sheets and went on to fiddle Tboss’ privates without her consent, as she was asleep.

The incident led to social media outrage and extended to lessons on consent, rape and everything else that exists in that ecosystem, as it was obvious not many understood the enormity of his actions. A number of social media users, even females surprisingly, took turns in blaming his victim for finding comfort in his bed in the first place; others said he only touched her and that was permissible compared to outright rape.

We have reason to believe this group of people are on the prowl again and have now taken to hailing their “hero” Kemen, assuring him of their support and loyalty in the rest of his journey. Reading through this sort of comments on Kemen’s social media page in response to the apology he penned Wednesday afternoon is just as saddening as it is alarming. Yes, alarming the number of individuals who will publicly encourage a man who has committed a sexual crime and should, in our opinion, be punished for the act as a deterrent for those who still assume all of this is still BBNaija.

We came across some comments that suggested his apology suffices in clearing the matter and we should move on from persecuting a “courageous, brave man who is humble enough to say sorry“. An apology that refers us to an interview he earlier granted where he explained his action that night, an apology to all women who perceived his actions as a sexual offence – essentially telling us it’s not an offence, we only chose to see it like that, an apology where he sneaks in advertisements for his fitness club, and many more needless rhetorics.

But with comments like “to err is human and to forgive is divine, you’ve done well bro, i support you 100%, God bless you Kemen, etc”, at least, civil society organisations should know now that there’s a lot of work to be done if we are to ever curb the sexual assault scourge and give victims a voice.
